I am not exactly sure what you mean by a fire shield rug. In order to place a wood burning fire pit on any combustible surface, you need to create a fire and heat barrier. If the fire shield rug will function as a fire and heat barrier you should be ok. In lieu of the fire shield rug you can use one layer of 1/4″ cement board (Dura-Rock), then a thin layer of steel and then another piece of cement board. Please note that embers may emit from a wood burning fire pit. Extreme caution should be used when a wood burning fire pit is around any combustible materials.
